Madge Alberts

Madge Alberts is Program Coordinator for the Children, Youth and Family Consortium. In this role, Madge works with all staff, as well as faculty and community partners, to look at ongoing ways the Consortium can link community needs and University resources. This includes communication and policy efforts, as well as creating linkages, identifying needs or convening special work groups.

Before joining the Consortium, Madge was a family development specialist with the University of Minnesota Extension Service, most recently as its Children, Youth and Families Program Leader. From 1989 until 1996, Madge was a county Extension Educator in Dodge County, Minnesota, just west of Rochester, where she specialized in Family Development (one of Extension's 10 specializations at the time).

Madge holds a bachelor's degeree in Home Economics (minor in music; undeclared minor in psychology) from UMD. In addition, she completed a Master of Arts at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in New Brighton. Her degree program was religious studies, with focus in pastoral care and counseling. Research in which Madge has been involved includes perceptions of quality of life in dairy farm families; research on the scope and nature of Extension program's with children, youth and families; Extension's role, historically, with children, youth and families. She is a frequent speaker around the state on issues related to rural families, change and loss, integrating work and family, strengthening and supporting marriage, the effects of divorce on children, and other topics related to families.

Her home is still in Dodge County where her husband is a dairy producer, and she commutes to the CYFC's office on the Minneapolis campus.
