Realizing the University's Promise for Minnesota Children and Youth

Sara Benning

In April of 2006, Sara Benning joined CYFC as Special Projects Coordinator. As a University of Minnesota Family Social Science undergraduate, Sara became interested in understanding family dynamics from an ecological framework, and particularly concerned about sexual and relationship violence. Sara recently completed her Masters of Liberal Studies, an interdisciplinary masters program at the University of Minnesota, where her focus was on sexual violence prevention and education within specific college populations. Sara’s enthusiasm, educational background, and role as both student and staff at the University of Minnesota provides the communities CYFC serves with a growing range of experiences as she organizes University-community events, projects and activities that address the pressing needs of children, youth and families. Some of those projects and activities include:
  • The Parent Involvement Resource Sharing Network (PIRSN), a learning and resource-sharing network of parent involvement practitioners who gather in an effort learn from each others’ practices and from research while exploring ways to intersect and connect around parent involvement.
  • Minnesota’s Promise, a collaborative effort seeking to create a coherent, world-class educational system in Minnesota at the school, district, community and state levels. For more information, visit: http://www.minnesotaspromise.org/index.html.
  • CYFC’s Family Impact Policy Initiative (FIPI), which promotes a family perspective in policy development, convenes dialogue among policymakers, analyzes the impact public policies have on families, and connects family-relevant research and state policymaking.
To contact Sara about any of the above efforts, please email her at sbenning@umn.edu or call her at 612.626.0715.
