Adolescents : Community Resources and Programs

This section features research, publications and program materials related to youth ages 12 to 18 years old and their families. Topics include adolescents development, physical and mental health, violence prevention, parent-adolescent relationships, peer relationships, formal and informal education, transition from school to work, opportunities for civic engagement, and community supports for youth.


Advocates for Youth

Advocates for Youth is dedicated to creating programs and advocating for policies that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. Advocates provides information, training, and strategic assistance to youth-serving organizations, policy makers, youth activists, and the media in the United States and the developing world.

Institute for Youth Development

IYD is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that promotes a comprehensive risk avoidance message to youth for five harmful risk behaviors that are inextricably linked: alcohol, drugs, sex, tobacco and violence. IYD believes that children and teens, provided with consistent and sound messages, are capable of making positive choices to avoid these risk behaviors altogether, especially if they are empowered by strong parent and family connections.

Minnesota Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Parenting

MOAPPP's mission is to strengthen policies and programs related to adolescent pregnancy prevention, adolescent pregnancy care and adolescent parenting in Minnesota.

Resource Center for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention

ReCAPP provides practical tools and information to effectively reduce sexual risk-taking behaviors. Teachers and health educators will find up-to-date, evaluated program materials to help with their work with teens.

The Bridge for Runaway Youth

Providing the link between youth, parents and the community they offer free and confidential services grounded in research.

Lessons from the designated driver campaign

The designated driver concept is a new component of the nation's comprehensive strategy for reducing alcohol-related traffic fatalities through prevention, deterrence and treatment. This paper explains how the designated driver concept serves as a vehicle for changing social norms; describes the national designated driver campaign and the involvement of the public and private sectors; presents public opinion findings documenting the wide popularity and growing usage of the designated driver concept; responds to criticisms raised by advocates of other approaches; extracts seven generalizable lessons from the designated driver campaign; and applies those lessons to the issue of teenage alcohol abuse.

Youth Today

Youth Today is a national, independent newspaper that is published 10x per year by the nonprofit American Youth Work Center.  Its readership of 59,000 subscribers includes an eclectic mix of professionals who work directly with youth or in the youth services field.

Yellow Ribbon

Yellow Ribbon is an outreach program focused on suicide prevention for teens and parents. The website contains information on depression and suicide and links to training and information for youth, parents and teachers. It also contains resources for support.

SA/VE (Suicide Awareness/Voices of Education)

SA/VE is an organization focused on raising awareness about depression and suicide for all ages. The website contains a list of signs and symptoms, and a depression checklist, along with numerous other resources.

Wacydasp

Wacydasp is a website containing information on depression and suicide awareness. Washington County, MN has put this website together, but it contains information and resources pertinent to everyone.
