This section
addresses individual, family and community factors that influence
the development and well-being of children from the prenatal
period through the first five years of life.
Included
are data on the status of young children, discussion of key
developmental issues from birth to five, research findings
on factors associated with healthy growth and development,
and information about proven or promising strategies to promote
good outcomes for young children and their families.
Center for Advanced Studies
in Child Welfare (CASCW)
The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) is a part
of the School of SocialWork at the University of Minnesota. CASCW
brings the University of Minnesota together with county and state
social services in a public-private partnership dedicated to improving
the lives of high-risk families and children. CASCW sponsors workshops,
forums, and conferences on emerging issues in child welfare, as well
as supporting ongoing research on child welfare topics and disseminating
information to assist child welfare practitioners, educators, and
policy makers.
Center for Applied Research
& Educational Improvement (CAREI)
The Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI)
is a collaborative organization that brings the resources of the College
of Education and Human Development and the University of Minnesota
to bear on educational issues in Minnesota and across the nation.
Center for Child and
Family Health Promotion Research
Located within the University of Minnesota's School of Nursing, the
Center for Child and Family Health Promotion Research develops and
disseminates community-based interventions that seek to improve the
lives of children and families. Research topics range from home visiting
programs to community-wide violence prevention, and from healthy births
to youth development.
Center
for Children with Special Health Care Needs
In response to the growing population of children with chronic illness
and disability, the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota
developed a graduate focus known as the Children with Special Health
Care Needs area of study. This program emphasizes a holistic approach
to care of children and adolescents with focus on family and community
contexts.
Center for Early
Education and Development (CEED)
The Center for Early Education and Development (CEED) provides information
regarding young children (birth to age eight), including children
with special needs, in the areas of education, child care, child development,
and family education.
The Web site contains information about CEED activities, including
research, training, and publications geared toward improving professional
practices, supporting parents, and information policy development.
Center for Neurobehavioral Development
The Center for Neurobehavioral Development is a research center that
houses over a dozen studies about children’s cognitive and neurobehavioral
functioning. Research at the Center is discovering how brain development
affects the way children think, learn and express emotions as they
grow from infants to adults. Our research projects gain support from
nationally recognized grants, such as the National Institutes of Health
and the MacArthur Foundation.
College of Education and Human
Development
The College of Education and Human Development at the University
of Minnesota is home to many areas of study. Information about the

Early
Childhood Program Area, Institute on Community Integration
The Early Childhood Services Program Area addresses the social, emotional,
educational, and other developmental needs of young children who have
(or are at substantial risk for) developmental disabilities, and their
family members.
Activities in this area include personnel preparation, best practices
development, collaborative program development and evaluation with
a broad range of community-based programs, policy formulation, technical
assistance, and research. Information regarding particular projects

Early Childhood Research Institute
on Measuring Growth and Development
Investigators at the Universities of Minnesota, Kansas, and Oregon
launched the Early Childhood Research Institute on Measuring Growth
and Development (ECRI-MGD) in October, 1996, to produce a comprehensive
system for continuously measuring the skills and needs of individual
children with disabilities from birth to eight. Information about

Harris
Center for Infant and Toddler Development
The Irving B. Harris Training Center for Infant and Toddler Development
serves as a model for blending research with practice and policy.
Harris Center faculty bring rich knowledge, broad experience and multiple
skills to the field of infant/toddler development and infant mental
health.
Healthy
Generations
Healthy Generations is published 3 times a year by the Center for
Leadership Education in Maternal and Child Public Health. The expertise
of faculty and the experiences of practitioners are combined to create
a publication focused on a special topic. Past issues have included
family planning, children’s environmental health, early childhood,
and childhood poverty plus more.
Institute of Child Development
The Institute of Child Development (ICD), the department of Child
Psychology at the University of Minnesota, has long been a premier
center of scholarship, teaching, and outreach devoted to the understanding
