Communities: Data Sources

This section investigates a wide range of community supports for children, families, and people of all ages and backgrounds.

It includes research and information on community institutions, such as schools, clinics, libraries, parks, faith based organizations, cultural and civic centers, and other places for human and social interaction. Safe neighborhoods, good jobs, affordable housing, accessible public services, family-friendly workplaces, quality education,and opportunities for civic engagement are important dimensions of healthy communities.


Metro Trend Watch 2004

An eye-opening look at the health and well-being of the seven county Twin Cities community. Areas studied include: Good start in Life; School success; Affordable housing; Economic opportunity, and Safety from crime.

Minnesota Demographic Data

The State Demographic Center at Minnesota Planning analyzes and distributes data from state, U.S. Census Bureau and other sources. It provides county and city level population data, and also publishes special reports, like the recent report on Asian-Americans in MN.

Minnesota Socio-economic Data

MinnStats provides a repository of socio-economic data. It is coordinated by the Economic Resource Group, an informal organization of state research managers formed for the purpose of improving economic analysis and access to state data through interagency coordination.

Minnesota Planning

Minnesota planning collects and publishes statewide data on children and families. Much of it is organized by region, county, and city. It includes Children's Report Cards as well as Minnesota Milestones.

Metro Trend Watch

Metro Trend Watch tracks the seven-county metro region’s progress in five areas; school success, affordable housing, economic opportunity, safety, and healthy start.

The National Survey of America’s Families

The NSAF is a major new survey focusing on the economic, health, and social characteristics of children, adults under the age of 65, and their families. In 1999, interviews were conducted in over 48,000 households, yielding information on over 100,000 people. The NSAF sample is representative of the nation as a whole and of 13 states, including Minnesota.

The Kaiser Family Foundation’s State Health Facts Online

This resource contains the latest state-level data on health statistics, health services and policies, including minority health, women’s health, health insurance, and others. It compares Minnesota demographics and data with other states and U.S. figures.

American Indian Reservation List

Minnesota has the twelfth largest American Indian population in the country. The Minnesota Indian Affairs Bureau provides demographic information, background, and contact information on Minnesota's seven Anishabe (Chippewa, Ojibwe) reservations and four Dakota (Sioux) communities.

Child Trends Data Bank

Description: This site is a one-stop-shop for the latest national trends and research on over 70 key indicators of child and youth well-being, with new indicators added each month.  Produced by Child Trends, the databank is designed to serve everyone from journalists, policymakers, service providers, researchers, students, advocates, parents, youth, and the public.

Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans

The Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans provides demographic and background information about Asian-Pacific individuals living in Minnesota.
