1. Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement
CAREI is a collaborative organization that brings the resources of the college
of Education and Human Development and the University of Minnesota to bear on
education issues in Minnesota and across the nation. Information about after
school issues is available at this site.
2. National Youth Development Research Response Initiative
Report: Stimulating Research, Promoting Youth Development
This report, published by the Center for 4-H Development at the University
of Minnesota, examines the extent to which the field of youth development and
structured out-of-school time programs are suffering from the inadequate integration
of research, education, and practice functions.
3. Minnesota Commission on Out-of-School Time
The Minnesota Commission on Out-of-School Time is dedicated to ensuring that
all children and youth in Minnesota have opportunities to learn and develop
during their non-school hours. Information about the Commission, the activities
of the Commission, and links to information about positive youth development
and research are available at this site.

4. Out-of-School Time Learning and Development (Harvard)
Through the Out-of-School Time Learning and Development project, the Harvard
Family Research Project is working in partnership with other organizations
to build the out-of-school field with a focus on out-of-school learning
and development for children ages 5-13. This project identifies and research
key issues in out-of-school time evaluation and promotes strategic use
of this information to improve the quality, accessibility, and sustainability
of out-of-school time programs across the nation. This site offers an out-of-school
time evaluation profiles database, resources and publications, and links
to web-based resources.
5. Afterschool Alliance
The Afterschool Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness
of the importance of afterschool programs and advocating for quality, affordable
programs for children. This site highlights top afterschool stories, disseminates
research and key data, promotes the “Afterschool is key” campaign,
and recommendations for how to advocate for afterschool programs.
6. The Finance Project: Out-of-School Time
The Finance Project is a comprehensive clearinghouse of information and technical
assistance resources to support decision-making that produces and sustains
good results for children, families, and communities. Publications about out-of-school
time for policy makers, program administrators, service provides, researchers,
academics and students, and others are provided on this site.
7. The Forum for Youth Development
The goal of the Forum is to create strategic alliances among the full range
of organizations that invest in youth, and to forge strong connections with
organizations that invest in youth, children, families, and communities.
Resources available are papers, articles, editorials, written and PowerPoint
presentations, and other tools that have been created by Forum staff and
consultants. Also included is a series on out-of-school time policy commentary.

National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST)
The mission of NIOST is to ensure that all children, youth, and families
have access to high quality programs, activities, and opportunities during
non-school hours. Research, training, and curriculum information is available.
NIOST also supports a clearinghouse on the out-of-school time workforce.
It is a good source for information on what’s happening across
the country to improve education, training, and compensation for the
out-of-school time workforce. A bibliography database is available to
search for articles, books, and papers.
9. National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning
The National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning at the Southwest
Educational Development Laboratory builds partnerships to develop engaging
and challenging activities to support academic learning in afterschool
settings. The partnership carries out the following activities: site
identification, site validation, product development, technical assistance,
and national and regional training.
10. Resources for After-School Programming
Through this website the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory
(NCREL) provides many resources to help a program from every stage of
development. The links available at this web-site provide resources for
crating effective after-school programs, information and grant-writing
assistance for federal funding opportunities through the United States
Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers,
national and NCREL regional resources, and strengthening the ties between
the transitional day school and after-school programs.
11. Afterschool.gov
www.afterschool.gov offers one-stop access to government resources that
support after school programs. The site is designed for anyone who cares
about kids 6-18-providers, parents, and kids and teens. You can find information
to help you understand the issues that face kids and teens or fund, start
and operate an after school program.
12. Enriching
Children’s Out-of-School Time (ERIC
Digest)
This Digest provides information about several topics that are associated
with out-of-school time. Issues addressed include the definition of enrichment
programs, extracurricular activities, academic enrichment programs, and
enrichment program funding. Additional resources are identified for further
examination of the issue.
13. Academic Effects of After-School Programs (ERIC Digest)
This Digest describes types of after-school programs and discusses recent
research on who participates and the effects of participation on children’s
school performance. Additional resources are identified for further exploration
of the issue.

National Center for Family and Community Connections with Schools
The National Center for Family and Community Connections with Schools
bridges research and practice-linking people with research-based information
and resources that they can use to effectively connect schools, families
and communities. A part of the Center’s efforts are directed towards
after-school programs. Valuable resources to support after-school programs
for school-aged children are provided.
15. A New Day Begins After School (National Association
of Elementary School Principals)
This brief provides information about the state of after-school programs
and how schools and school principals can play a pivotal role in making
after school programs work.
