Minnesota Family Impact Seminars

Family Impact Seminars connect research and state policymaking by providing state-of-the-art information in an objective, non-partisan manner. Each topical seminar includes forums, briefing reports, and follow-up activities explicitly for legislators, key agencies and staff.  Rather than lobbying for particular policies, the seminars offer a range of policy options and provide opportunities for participants to identify common ground.

Minnesota’s first Family Impact Seminar on “Early Childhood Populations, Programs and Policy Options” will take place during the 2008 legislative session.

University of Minnesota Children, Youth, and Family Consortium (CYFC)
The Children, Youth, and Family Consortium was established during the Fall of 1991 to build the capacity of the University of Minnesota and Minnesota communities to use research, influence policy and enhance practice to improve the well-being of Minnesota’s children, youth and families.

University of Minnesota Center for Early Education and Development (CEED)

CEED’s mission is to improve developmental outcomes for children through:

  • Applied Research. Identify pressing community needs and conduct focused, high impact studies to solve problems.

  • Professional Development. Provide current and future early childhood professionals with research-based training.
  • Outreach (Publications, Events). Share knowledge widely to support program and policy development, strategic partnerships, and early childhood advocacy.  Host events such as the McEvoy Lectures and Harris Forum.

University of Minnesota Institute for Child Development (ICD)
The Institute of Child Development is an internationally known premiere center pursuing research on basic psychological processes underlying the development of infants, children, and youth, and on the applications of this knowledge to improving the quality of human life. The Institute is a part of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota.

Selected Local Resources

Early Childhood Research Collaborative (ECRC)
The Early Childhood Research Collaborative (ECRC) is a unique partnership that brings together prominent researchers and faculty members in a variety of disciplines at the University with economists at the Federal Reserve to develop and synthesize research on cost-effective investments in early childhood.

Resources include the papers posted on the web site focus on effective programs and practices from preschool to third grade (PK-3), the productivity argument for investing in young children, developing high quality PK-3 classrooms, the long-term effects of Child-Parent Center early childhood intervention, and the role of cooperative behavior in preschoolers' social development.

Minnesota Child Care Policy Research Partnership (MCCPRP)

The MCCPRP is a collaboration among Minnesota state agencies, counties, child care resource and referral agencies, and researchers. Coordinated by the Minnesota Department of Human Services, the partnership brings together researchers and policymakers from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, county child care units from Anoka, Becker, Brown, and Hennepin Counties, the University of Minnesota, Child Trends, Wilder Research Center, the Minnesota Child Care Resource and Referral Network, and several national researchers.
