Positive mental health is essential for successful growth and development for people of all ages. According to the Surgeon General's report on mental health, the nation is facing a public crisis in mental health care for children and youth. One in ten children is impaired by mental health problems, and about one in twenty adults is impaired by mental health problems. Almost two thirds of people with diagnosable mental health problems do not seek treatment. Responsibility for mental health care is dispersed across multiple settings, which results in services that are fragmented and inaccessible. Families often need help to identify mental health problems, and, once identified, need easy access to high quality and coordinated care.
