It's elementary: Teach gender equity and respect

There are an increasing number of tools to assist educators specifically with preventing sexual harassment in the elementary grades. Such tools, however, need to be used with prevention and social skills materials because many behavioral issues are interrelated. Defining sexual harassment concepts and teaching preventive skills can be more effective and welcome when such concepts and skills are considered in the context of broader, pro-social outcomes.

The Reflection on the Screen: Television's Image of Children

How children see people their age portrayed on television is important. Television's images help shape how young people view themselves and their place in the world around them: TV can expand a child's aspirations, or it can limit her horizons; it can teach him what is important or unimportant- what is to be valued and what is to be shunted aside. The picture television paints of kids also affects overall public perceptions about children and the validity and importance we attach to their concerns.

Taking Charge of Your TV. A Guide to Critical Viewing for Parents and Children.

Television has a tremendous influence on American family life. As the dominant force in our media culture, television has changed our habits, what we do with our free time, when and how we eat meals, when we go to bed, and how we raise and entertain our children. Television is an important part of children's lives, offering them a look at many things they will never have the chance to see for themselves. But TV viewing, especially by children, needs to be controlled.
