Research Collaborations
As a hub for multidisciplinary work and from its perch at the intersection of the campus and communities, the Children, Youth and Family Consortium (CYFC) is uniquely situated to identify potential partners for University and community members for research and other types of collaborations. We convene partners, coordinate collaborative efforts, assist in conceptualizing projects, and provide the “glue” that helps partnerships stay together and move to implementation of an idea. Working across disciplines and in collaborations with University and community members requires navigating sometimes unfamiliar systems, cultures and processes. CYFC can provide assistance to individuals and groups as they prepare for this work or serve as a “critical friend” in situations that have created tension.

Partnering for School Success

CYFC was instrumental in creating a “cultural guide approach” with Extension Family Development educators to create and document the impact of culturally-responsive parent education curricula to increase parent involvement in children’s education and to achieve healthy parent – school partnerships. In addition to assisting with the conceptualization of this model, CYFC linked Extension educators to community members from African American and Latino communities with expertise in assisting others in navigating their cultures. These individuals have served as cultural guides, co-designing and implementing processes to gather culturally-specific information important in designing materials and programs for each culture.
