Quick Reference Guide
Parenting Information for Working with Latino Families
The following chart gives resources that are helpful to
social service workers working with Latino parents. Materials range
from articles to curriculum and include pamphlets, videos, research
studies, and criteria for evaluating parenting curriculum for Latino
parents.
The materials are listed in alphabetical order, but they
are not ranked by quality. They are, however, identified by the key
items they address. A "yes" has been added to the key item
box if there is certainty that it is addressed within the material.
If the key item box is blank, that does not mean the issue
is not addressed in the material. What it means is that based on the
information the author had, she was unable to conclude with confidence
that it was included in the material.
There are six categories. They are (1) culturally appropriate,
(2) linguistically appropriate, (3) child development stages, (4) child
abuse prevention, (5) program evaluation, and (6) age specific material.
Culturally appropriate - means that the material has been
created by the Latino community or when it was translated, it was not
only linguistically transformed into Spanish, but was also adjusted
to suit the needs and expectations of Latino culture.
Linguistically appropriate - means that the material is
in Spanish.
Child development stages - means that parenting for children
at different ages and stages has been addressed, either by diverse curriculum
for different levels or because the material identified teaching parents
about a child's development.
Child abuse prevention - means that family violence and/or
prevention have been explicitly mentioned as an element of the material.
Program evaluation - means that either the curriculum
has an evaluation component (it could be by parents who use it, by facilitators,
or by researcher) and/or an evaluation by a research study has been
completed to look at what elements make a good curriculum for Latino
parents.
Age specific material - identifies the age range
of the children that the material is focusing on.
